Honouring a Leader of the Annex.
Civic leaders and community representatives will join together on Saturday morning,September 13th at 10:30 a.m., to pay tribute to long-time Annex resident Paul Martel.
Paul’s advocacy and dedication has been key to the development and preservation of parks and green space in the Annex. Without his inspiration and example, Jean Sibelius Square and Taddle Creek Park may never have been redeveloped.
But Paul is most clearly known for the ongoing success of Ecology Park at 10 Madison Avenue. Through his efforts and the efforts of others, an empty lot became an oasis of tall grasses, shrubs, wild flowers and shade trees.
“The development of Ecology Park has reflected a vision of inclusive access and participation that is open to all,” says Paul Martel. “Every Saturday morning during the spring, summer, and fall we get to feel the earth and soil in our hands, smell the flowers, and watch the birds, bees and insects.”
At 10:30 on Saturday, September the 13th, residents of the Annex will join civic leaders in paying tribute to this long-time Annex resident by renaming Ecology Park. It will now be known as Paul Martel Park, in recognition of his contribution to our neighborhood.
The Chair of the Annex Residents’ Association, David Harrison, says the honour is well deserved. “There can surely be no better example of community and civic engagement than Paul Martel’s effort and determination to bring Ecology Park to reality.”
Ecology Park is a volunteer project of the Annex Residents’ Association with funds administered by the City of Toronto. The original Ecology Park was dismantled in 1993 to allow for the construction of the Spadina LRT. For years the lot sat vacant, until the Annex Residents’ Association reminded the City in 2000 of its commitment to rebuild the Park.
Ecology Park celebrates the diverse ecosystems found in Ontario. If you are interested in volunteering in Ecology Park, please contact the Annex Residents’ Association at www.theara.org
