New High-Rises Being Planned for Bloor Street

The Annex Residents’ Association is alerting residents to a 42-storey high-rise being proposed for 316 Bloor Street, at the corner of Bloor and Madison.

A second high-rise, which we anticipate to be more than 30 stories, is planned for the nearby site of the Bloor Street United Church

These developments are the most important our community will be facing in a decade.

The two high-rises would leave the Bloor Street Urban Design Guidelines in shambles. They were adopted by City Council to guide development on the Bloor Street corridor from Avenue Road to Bathurst Street.

The developer of the 316 Bloor Street site, State Development Group, has filed a formal application for the 42-storey building, despite requests from community groups and the Councillor Joe Cressy to that it be delayed.

Councillor Cressy is sponsoring a community consultation meeting where you can get more information from City planners and the developer and make your voice heard.

Come out for this very important meeting.

    Day: Thursday April 2nd
    Time: 6:30-8:30 PM
Place: Room SS1085, Sidney Smith Building, University of Toronto,
    100 St. George St.

Hold the Date: April 30th - Mayor Tory Speaks to His Neighborhood

The Mayor of Toronto will be the keynote speaker at this year’s Annual General Meeting of the Annex Residents’ Association.

The Mayor’s speech, and the development pressures facing the neighbourhood, make this year’s meeting of the ARA a must for those interested in ensuring a healthy and thriving Annex.

The ARA’s Annual General Meeting will be held on:

    Day: Thursday, April 30th
    Time: 7:30 PM
    Place: The Friends' Meeting House
    60 Lowther Ave.
    All welcome!

    ARA In The News

The Annex Resident’s Association got a shout out from Ward 20’s councillor-elect Joe Cressy.

In an opinion piece http://gleanernews.ca/index.php/2014/10/25/its-time-to-build-our-city-again-2/#.VFZLnIcri-I in the Annex Gleaner, Cressy praised the ARA’s TreesPlease program for its beneficial effect on the environment.

“Yes, Rob Ford and Stephen Harper have their heads in the sand around climate change. But, in our local neighbourhoods, we have already experienced the effects of a changing environment, and the Annex Residents’ Association has already acted to improve the situation. Their
TreesPlease program works to survey, protect, and expand Toronto’s tree canopy thereby providing more shade, removing industrial emissions from the air, and increasing property values. This is a win-win situation, improving our environment and beautifying our neighbourhoods in the process.”

Cressy points out that TreesPlease is a good model for solving problems because it involves local residents. The ARA believes that the best solutions always involve people and is dedicated to achieving this at a local level in our neighborhood.

Ward 20 Sets a Record for 2014 Municipal Election

Don’t miss out on the most closely fought race in the Toronto.

We have a total of 22 candidates who want to represent us as our Councillor at Toronto City Hall. That’s more candidates than are running in any of the other 43 wards in the city.

The Annex Residents’ Association, together with our neighboring community organizations (the Harbord Village Residents’ Association, Huron Sussex Residents' Organization, Seaton Village Residents’ Association and the Bloor-Annex and the Harbord Street BIAs) is sponsoring two forums so the residents of Ward 20 can hear from their local candidates.

The forum to hear the candidates for Councillor for Ward 20:

    Date: Thursday, October 16th
Time: 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm

Place: Trinity-St Paul’s Centre (Bloor Street W. at Robert)

The forum to hear the candidates for School Trustees for Ward 10 (our trustee ward) will take place a week later:

    Date: Thursday, October 23rd
Time: 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm

Place: Trinity-St Paul’s Centre (Bloor Street W. at Robert)
